Arguably, Portishead have never written a bad song in their careers. Albeit little output compared to the length of their career, but still an amazing feat.
Portishead are for me about one thing; Beth Gibbons: one of the greatest female singers the world has ever seen. On a tightrope between pain, suffering, beauty and heartache; her voice is just mesmerizing to listen to. They achieved what very few bands ever achieve; they created their own sound. A trip-hop mash-up of angelic vocals, MIDI samples and turn-table riffs thrown in.
There’s not much more to say other than to talk about this song. I believe the track ‘Roads’ to be in the Top10 greatest songs ever written. From the second that tremolo keys part kicks in, you are hooked. Your attention is taken aback, the silence of all other instruments speaks volumes, and then bam; that voice. I get the same exhilarating pleasure listening to this today as I did 10 years ago when I heard it. Unbelievable.
